A Cause for Freedom 24X18

Created by Steven J. Felicetti 12-21
Background: This painting depicts the attack on Ft. Wagner by the Union Army colored infantry regiment that led the charge of the second attempt on Ft Wagner, in Jul 1863. It was a gruesome battle that led to mostly hand to hand combat. The lead element took massive casualties including its commanding officer, but they continued to fight on and display great bravery and tenacity throughout, proving their worth on the battlefield.
After visiting wounded members of the 54th, a writer for the New York Post reported “No man can pass among these sufferers…and not be inspired with the deepest abhorrence of slavery and an unquenchable desire for the freedom of their race.”
